Long division

Long division is more suitable for bigger divisors, but it can be a better alternative to bus stop even for single digit divisors, as once you get the hang of it the layout is much clearer.

The following diagram below shows the steps involved in long division for 19850 ÷ 16 .

  1. First write out the division as shown.
  2. 16 goes into 19 once so write the answer 1 above the bus stop. 16 times makes 16, so write that under the 19. Subtract 16 from 19 and write the remainder, 3, underneath, shown in red.
  3. Drop the 8 down to make 38 and write it as shown.
  4. 16 goes into 38 twice, so write the answer 2 above the bus stop. 16 times 2 is 32, so write that under the 38 and subtract to give 6, write this remainder under the 32 as shown.
  5. Proceed in the same way. After the 4 has been calculated, we hit a situation where even with dropping the first zero down, the 16 won't divide. In this case, write a zero above the bus stop. add a decimal point and drop another zero down. This time 16 will go into 100 6 times, so write the answer above the bus stop.
  6. Continue in the same way until the 16 divides exactly into 80, making a final result of 1240.625.
