Foundation arithmetic expressed in English
This rote list provides many examples of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division phrased in English.
This is because these operators can be phrased in maybe hundreds of ways in English. Both the 'Functional maths' exam and paper 2 and 3 of GCSE maths ( calculator ) have a heavier focus on problems phrased in English ( although there is much discussion underway amongst Ofqual, the exam boards and government moving forward to new-style exams. )
As such, for those students who struggle as much in English as they do in maths, this module provides an accessible way to practice understanding common phrasings, with single sentences.
Examples:
"The workforce of twenty jobs was slashed by a quarter to give?"
"How many times does three fit into nine?"
"Bob's salary of £25,000 soared by 30% up to what?"
